How to See Who Someone Recently Followed on Instagram (2026)

By the FollowBuster team··5 min read

Instagram lets you open anyone's public Following list, but it never tells you which follows are new or when they happened. Here's what actually works to spot someone's recent follows, and the limits no app can get around.

Why the Following list doesn't help much

When you open someone's profile and tap Following, Instagram shows the accounts they follow right now. There are no dates, nothing is marked as new, and anything they unfollowed is simply gone. If they follow hundreds of accounts, a new name is easy to miss, and you can't tell whether it was added yesterday or two years ago.

So the only honest way to know what's new is to compare the list at two moments in time.

Method 1: snapshot it yourself

  1. Open their profile and tap Following.
  2. Screenshot the whole list (or copy the names into a note). This is your baseline.
  3. A day or a week later, do the same again.
  4. Compare the two. Names in the new list that weren't in the old one are new follows. Names that vanished are unfollows.

It's free and it works, but it's slow, easy to get wrong, and it only tells you what changed between the two days you happened to check.

Method 2: let a tracker compare for you

A follow tracker does the same thing automatically. FollowBuster, for example, saves a snapshot of everyone a public account follows, checks again every day, and shows you:

  • every new account they followed, newest first, with the day window it happened in (for example "followed between Oct 14 and Oct 15"),
  • every account they unfollowed,
  • their full current following list, searchable,
  • an email when a daily check finds something.

You only type their username. There's no password involved, nothing is done from your account, and they're never notified.

What no app can do

Be wary of anything that promises more than public data allows:

  • Private accounts. Instagram only shows who a private account follows to its approved followers. No app can see it.
  • Exact follow times. Instagram doesn't publish when a follow happened. A tracker can only narrow it down to the window between two checks.
  • Follows from before you started. You can see their current list, but there's no history of what was new last month unless someone took a snapshot back then.
  • Profile views, story views, DMs and likes. Not available to anyone. Apps that claim otherwise are guessing.

And never give any app your Instagram password, or theirs. You don't need it for public data. More in are follower tracker apps safe?

Using it kindly

Following lists are public, but the person behind them is real. A new follow is usually a friend of a friend, a brand, or a meme page. Use what you find for your own peace of mind, and if something worries you, a calm conversation beats a screenshot. Don't use any tool to harass or pressure someone.

Quick answers

Does Instagram show who someone followed recently?

Not with dates. You can see their current Following list, but nothing marks what's new.

Will they know I looked?

No. Viewing a public following list, or using a tool that reads public data, doesn't notify anyone.

Can I see who a private account follows?

Only if they approved you as a follower. No app can.

Can I see who unfollowed me, too?

Yes, from your own free Instagram export. See how to see who unfollowed you.
