How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram (2026)
Instagram shows you a follower count, never a list of who left. If your number dropped and you want names, these are the methods that work in 2026, from most to least reliable.
Why Instagram doesn't tell you
Unfollowing is private by design. Instagram doesn't send a notification, doesn't keep a public history, and the Followers list in the app only shows who follows you right now. So the only way to know who left is to compare two lists from two moments in time.
The good news: Instagram gives you those lists itself. Every account can download its own data, including a complete list of followers and following with the date each follow happened.
Method 1: compare two official exports
This is the most accurate method, because the data comes straight from Instagram.
- Download your Followers and following data from Instagram (we explain every tap in this step-by-step guide). Choose format JSON and date range All time.
- Keep the ZIP somewhere safe. This is your baseline.
- One or two weeks later, download a fresh export the same way.
- Compare the followers lists. Every username in the old list that's missing from the new one unfollowed you, removed you, or deactivated or renamed their account.
If you have a few hundred followers you can compare by hand in a spreadsheet, but it gets slow and error-prone quickly. A single typo or an account that changed its name can throw you off.
Method 2: let a tool do the comparison
This is the same method, automated. FollowBuster reads your export in your browser and saves only usernames and follow dates. Every new upload is compared with the previous one, so you get:
- The exact names of people who unfollowed you since your last upload.
- A flag when an unfollower is someone you still follow.
- New followers, people who don't follow you back, your fans and your mutuals.
- A timeline of every upload, so you can see when a drop happened.
Because it uses your official export, it never needs your Instagram password, and nothing ever logs in to your account.
Method 3: check one profile by hand
If you only wonder about one person, open their profile, tap Following, and search for your username. If you're not there, they don't follow you. It's free and instant, but it only works one account at a time, and it doesn't tell you when they left. For anything more than a couple of people, use an export.
What to avoid
Many unfollower apps ask you to sign in with your Instagram username and password. That hands a third party full access to your account. It can trigger login alerts and security checks, and Instagram itself warns against giving your login to other apps. You don't need to: your export has everything required to find unfollowers.
Be careful with apps that promise to show private accounts, profile views or exact follow times. Instagram doesn't make that data available to anyone. What a tool can honestly do is read a public account's following list and compare it over time (that's how FollowBuster's tracker works, see how to see who someone recently followed). How to read your results
Not every missing name is a deliberate unfollow. A username can disappear because the person:
- unfollowed you,
- removed you as a follower, or blocked you,
- deactivated or deleted their account (it may come back later),
- changed their username (the old name disappears and the new one appears as a "new follower").
Instagram also periodically removes spam accounts, which can make many followers vanish at once. If a batch of unfollowers are empty, recently created accounts, that's usually a clean-up rather than real people leaving. Our guide on why followers drop covers each cause.
Quick answers
Does Instagram notify someone if I check who unfollowed me?
No. Downloading your own data and comparing it doesn't interact with anyone's account.
How often should I check?
Every one to two weeks works well. The more often you upload, the more precisely you can tell when someone left.
Does this work for private accounts?
Yes. Your own export works whether your account is public or private.
